All the water coming from the faucets in your home contains two main minerals: Calcium and Magnesium. How “hard” or “soft” your water is, depends on the amount of these minerals detected in your water. You can have the mineral amounts measured by a professional or use a DIY kit from your local hardware store. Either way, water is measured by the milligrams per liter of dissolved calcium carbonate: 0 to 60 mg/L is considered soft to slightly hard; 61 to 120 mg/L is considered moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L is considered hard; and more than 180 mg/L is considered very hard. A less specific, yet still dependable way to determine if your home is the victim of hard water, is to look at your plumbing fixtures. Do you notice water stains in your sink? Is there built-up around your shower head? Is your laundry not getting as clean as it needs to be? Hard water is likely the culprit.
To be clear, there is no legal requirement to soften you water. However, after considering the advantages of soft water coming from your faucets, most homeowners decide to have a water softener installed. Not only will soft water reduce or eliminate water stains in your sink and build up on your shower-head, but studies show that water with decreased calcium and magnesium is good for your hair and skin!
